What is an SR-22 Financial Responsibility and How Long Do I Need To Keep It On File?

We get this question every day and simply put, an SR-22 is an endorsement to an insurance policy.  This endorsement, termed 'Certificate of Financial Responsibility', serves as proof to the state that you have purchased the court ordered future financial responsibility.

The SR22 is required to stay on file for three consecutive years.  This means, that if your policy cancels or lapses for any reason during the three years the state will be notified.  The insurance carrier is legally obligated to inform the state of Washington when any policy with a filing lapses.

Who Needs an Sr22 Filing?

In Washington you may be required to file an SR-22 with the Department of Licensing for one or more of the following violations:
•  Driving under the influence (DUI)
•  Reckless driving
•  Driving without insurance
•  Driving on a revoked / suspended license
•  Failure to pay child support
•  Felony involving a motor vehicle or assault

Depending on your situation and the court order your requirements may change.  Make sure to maintain the financial responsibility coverage for the entire time period ordered by the court.

What is considered Driving Under the Influence (DUI)?
Under the state of WA driving laws, it is illegal for any licensed driver to operate a motor vehicle with a BAC limit above the state limits as outlined below.

Adult drivers with a BAC equal to or over = 0.08%
Minor drivers with a BAC equal to or over = 0.02%
Commercial drivers with a BAC equal to or over = 0.04%

Driving under the influence (DUI) includes all chemicals that are inhaled or ingested for the purpose of getting high, intoxicated or wasted.  Anything that has mind altering or hallucination effects are defined as a drug. When a person with a valid driver's license engages in this activity, they will end up with a suspended license and fines to reinstate their license.

How much is SR22 Insurance in WA?
The cost of coverage can vary depending on what type of policy and the demographics.  A certificate of financial responsibility can be endorsed onto a full coverage policy, a liability only auto insurance policy, a non owners auto policy, or a broad form policy.  The demographics used are; age, zip code, driving record, marital status, gender and type of vehicle.  They have nothing to do with the filing but, are used to determine premium.  These are the same factors used in regular auto insurance premiums. Most insurance companies will charge a filing fee of $50 - $100 depending on the circumstances.

We can get you the cheapest quote and take care of filing your proof of financial responsibility the same day.  For immediate service call 1-866-663-7561.
