The Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is essentially a breathalyzer attached to the ignition of a vehicle. They are usually only required for alcohol related offenses. The driver must blow into the device in order to start the vehicle. The IID measures Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). The state may require a driver to maintain an IID for a designated period of time without violation in order to maintain a valid drivers license. Some IID are equipped with camera and Global Positioning System (GPS) which allows monitoring of where the vehicle travels and who is blowing into it. The ignition interlock device must be installed and maintained monthly by an authorized company. Each monthly inspection verifies the device is working properly and transmits data to the state. The IID can only be removed by the authorized installer after the designated time is met without violation.
